There was no longer a program devoted to cinema on France Télévisions. At the start of 2023, among the new features for this return to school, France 2 is therefore adding a weekly magazine devoted to the 7th art to its schedule. And not least. Rather than a usual on-set talk show, Nice gesture (tribute to a 1939 film with Gary Cooper) will consist of meetings with personalities from French and international cinema who make the news.

Pierre Lescure, 77, was chosen to embody this program. One of the faces of the beginning – and of the great years – of Canal+, this enthusiast of the big screen had notably founded the major production company StudioCanal and was president of the Cannes Film Festival from 2014 to 2022. This great gentleman of television and film ciné will therefore go on the ground to discover film sets or to interview actors and actresses, directors and directors in places “that make sense”, explains France 2: dark rooms, museums, libraries… On the subject side, the objective will be to find the balance between popular and intimate cinema.

This choice of programming is also explained by the recovery of the rights of the Cannes Film Festival, historically on… Canal+. In addition to the broadcast of the opening and the closing, the encrypted channel relocated its 7 p.m. talk show to the Croisette, with great success at the time of Nowhere else and of the Grand Journal. Last year, for its first year, France Télé had not done the same. Here it is now equipped with a magazine that will cover Cannes 2023 and subsequent editions before, during and after. On the menu for the first few weeks: Virginie Efira at the cinema, a walk in Paris with Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land and the recent babylon), Tom Hanks in Stockholm or backstage at the Comédie-Française with Benjamin Lavernhe and Séphora Pondi, actors and members.
