The Moroccan Sports Press Association (AMPS) strongly condemned, on Sunday, “the hateful and hostile speech” conveyed during the opening ceremony of the African Nations Championship for local players (CHAN) in Algeria.

This political and racist speech odiously targeted Morocco and its supporters who were exemplary during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and commanded admiration through their discipline and their respect for sporting values, underlines a press release from the Association.

AMPS adds that in addition to this blatant attack on sporting values, the opening ceremony of CHAN was marked by out-of-context statements ignoring the rules and principles of the Olympic Charter, regretting that this event was instrumentalized for policies when it was supposed to bring together African sports youth around the values of living together and fair play.

Noting that the world press denounced the deprivation of the national team from traveling to Constantine to participate in the African Nations Championship and defend its title, insofar as the final authorization for its Royal Air Maroc flight, official carrier of the Moroccan football selections, has not been confirmed, the Association stresses that the CHAN organizing committee in Algeria continued its hostility towards Morocco, flouting the noble values of sport during the ceremony of opening of this sporting event.

Through these flagrant transgressions and violations, Algeria greatly politicizes each sporting event it organizes, indignantly AMPS urges the Confederation of African Football to take the necessary measures to do justice to the Moroccan selection which has been deprived to defend his title at CHAN and to the Moroccan public victim of odious racist remarks.
