Doping: Orji Okonkwo suspended by FIFA

Nigerian Orji Okonkwo has been suspended by FIFA for doping. The 24-year-old striker, who plays for FC Bologna, will be sidelined for the next four years.

The information was relayed by several media on Sunday and confirmed by the director of communication of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire. Sanctioned by the Italian national anti-doping organization last June, Orji Okonkwo saw his sentence ratified by FIFA. The 24-year-old striker is sentenced for 4 years after using clostebol, a prohibited product. But to justify himself, Orji Okonkwo said he did it to treat his knee.
“The Committee has decided to extend the sanction imposed on the player by the Italian Nado on June 20, 2022. Specifically, the player is sanctioned with a four-year suspension from all football-related activities in accordance with the decision”, can we read in the FIFA press release.
Aged 24 today, the former U17 world champion will see his sanction end when he turns 28. He will return on February 24, 2026, the date of the end of the sanction.
