The show “El Boustane Sepharadi” will be presented on November 30 and December 1, 2022 at the Mohammed V National Theater in Rabat. It brings together actors, singers and dancers from Israel’s National Theater “Habima”. Yitzhak Navon’s musical depicts social relations in a Sephardic Jewish neighborhood in early 20th-century Jerusalem.
The general director of the National Theater of Israel Habima, Noam Semel, said that it is a first in an Arab-Muslim country. This musical comedy by Yitzhak Navon immerses us in a Sephardic Jewish quarter of Jerusalem at the beginning of the 20th century, through the tribulations of the Castel family.
The play describes the family and social ties in this district, drawing with relish on the popular wisdom that guides the daily life of characters taken from the folklore of this community and inspired by the Moroccan and Sephardic roots of the author. The show is also the invocation of these songs of love, pain and joy, its romances which have stood the test of time and which are still sung today, with emotion and nostalgia, in the Moroccan and Sephardic diasporas.
