Finally the end of the Griezmann saga?

In Sunday night’s Madrid derby, Antoine Griezmann started his first game of the season

The Frenchman broke a streak of eight consecutive appearances as a substitute on Sunday.

The fact that Griezmann keeps coming on at almost exactly the same time every game, in the 63rd minute, has become a topic of amusement. Atletico Madrid are trying to prevent Griezmann from playing half of the matches for which he is available this season and the previous one, otherwise he will be forced to pay 40 million euros to FC Barcelona.

Last night the colchonero staff decided it was one of the few games they were willing to break this streak for. There’s no doubt that the Colchoneros have calculated that he can cross the 45-minute mark in a specific number of games this season without triggering the clause.

Speaking after the game for Mundo Deportivo, Diego Simeone was satisfied.

“Today we understood that Antoine could play from the start. He had a great game, he moved in different places. In the second half, he moved to the left side in order to play with two attackers . He had a great game.”

Although asked about the partnership between Griezmann and Joao Felix, Simeone admitted that things could have gone better.

“It is true that we were not able to connect as we wanted”.

Although in the end Griezmann didn’t create the danger Atleti would have liked, he was one of Atletico Madrid’s best players for the first 70 minutes. According to Sofascore, he completed 88 touches and three key passes.
