George Weah supports Morocco’s candidacy

George Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia and key figure in world football, gave his strongest support to the Moroccan file for the organization of CAN 2025.

George Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia and legend of world football, supports Morocco’s bid to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN).

In a communicated published on the website of the Liberian executive, this Thursday, January 19, the politician firmly refuted the rumors that claim that he supports the Algerian candidacy.

He recalls that he is “fully and strongly” behind the Moroccan file. “Liberia approves and fully supports Morocco’s bid to host the 2025 CAF Nations Cup. I made this commitment to King Mohammed VI. It is carved in stone,” says the leader.

George Weah recalls the continuous commitments and projects initiated by Morocco to raise African football to a better level. For this, Morocco deserves, in his view, to host the CAN.

He also returns to the historic fourth place of the Atlas Lions at the 2022 World Cup, which also legitimizes the hosting of CAN 2025. “We must do them honor,” said Weah.

“President Weah said he has already started campaigning for Morocco with football stakeholders across the continent,” the statement read.

As a reminder, the pan-African media Jeune Afrique assured, Wednesday, January 18, that the 2025 edition of the queen competition of CAF “will take place in North Africa and therefore, in Morocco or Algeria”.

In addition to the two Maghreb neighbors, Zambia and the Nigeria-Benin duo are also candidates for the organization of the competition.

The verdict should normally fall on February 10 next on the sidelines of the Morocco 2022 Club World Cup (February 1 to 11).
