How crash detection works on iPhone 14 and Watch

When presentation of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, Apple has introduced a brand new feature that uses various mobile sensors to detect car accidents. The manufacturer did not, however, go into the details of this solution immediately, but new information just published allows us to learn a little more on the subject.

According to the manufacturer, the functionality Accident detection is thus enabled by default. However, it is possible to deactivate it as you wish, in the event that you encounter too many false positives, for example. as some health services lament. To do this, here is the procedure to follow on iPhone:

  1. open the Settings app
  2. touch SOS emergency
  3. touch Call after a serious accident

You can also disable Accident detection for your Apple Watch:

  1. on iPhone, open the Watch app
  2. in the tab My watchtouch SOS emergency
  3. touch Call after a serious accident

Which devices are compatible?

Of course, Apple also unveiled the list of smartwatches and cell phones which come with the functionality Accident detection. We find the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max for mobiles. As for wearables, only Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 8 are eligible.

Yet, whether it’s the accelerometer or the gyroscope that we’re supposed to rely on Accident detection to work properly, these two sensors are also present under the hood of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. But it is possible that only the processing capacity of the A16 chip Bionic is quite powerful, the processor being absent from last year’s models.

Only for certain vehicles

Apple also adds that if Accident detection can effectively recognize incidents occurring on the road, this is only the case when the victim is traveling by car. It is therefore not known whether travel by motorcycle or scooter is supported, and it is probably not not the case on a bicycle or by electric scooter.

With Accident detectionyour iPhone automatically alerts the emergency services if you do not respond to the alert message that appears on the screen.
