This Wednesday, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Sidney Poitier was in the spotlight. For the screening of this very intimate documentary, its director, Oprah Winfrey, was alongside the daughters of the famous actor, Anika, Pamela, Sherri, Beverly, and Aisha. Also at the rendezvous: singer Cher and director Reginald Hudlin.
“Sidney” pays homage to the legendary character that he was, as well as his legacy as an actor, director and civil rights activist. In the documentary, several big names in Hollywood have testified. Among them, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Morgan Freeman, or even Spike Lee. The feature film also mixes archive footage and film clips. Produced by Oprah Winfrey, “Sidney” will be available September 23 on AppleTV+.
On her Instagram account, the 68-year-old host shared her joy at being part of this adventure. “In one day, ‘Sidney’ will come out. And tonight we had one last preview to celebrate him as a man, a father, and the mighty soul that he was. His daughter, Beverly Poitier asked the crowd today that if they wanted to honor her father’s legacy, they should leave the world better than they found it. This is how Sidney lived his amazing life. I can’t wait to share more with you in the coming days,” she captioned a video of her on the red carpet.
