Sophia Alj: champion in the tech world

QWhatever the field in which they work, some women entrepreneurs are real magnets for success. Models of leadership, they oversee successful businesses, successfully meeting all challenges. Sophia Alj is the perfect illustration of this. Known to the tech ecosystem in Africa, she is featured in the November issue of CIO Africa magazine which

ranked her among the 45 most influential women in the digital transformation of the African continent.

A proven innovator

Sophia Alj has the soul of an entrepreneur. To speak of his achievements is to speak of his successes in a field dominated by men. But before becoming today’s entrepreneur, our businesswoman grew up in the economic capital. Once she got her baccalaureate, she flew to McGill University in Canada where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, which she completed with a master’s degree in management at ESCP Business School. Back in Morocco, Sophia Alj joined the strategy consulting firm McKinsey.

In 2019, she answered the call of entrepreneurship and launched her first startup in the field of health. This is, a digital toolbox dedicated to dentists. Later, she co-founded with her husband Ismaël Belkhayat, a former strategy consultant at Boston Consulting Group, Chari, a B2B e-commerce/fintech startup. The application connects retailers in French-speaking Africa to FMCG (Fast moving Consumer Goods) companies. It is also the first purchasing center for consumer products for traditional local shops in Morocco. It is valued at nearly $100 million.

Based in Morocco, Chari also operates in Tunisia and Côte d’Ivoire, and allows local businesses to order all types of consumer items and have them delivered in less than 24 hours. A technological feat that puts the power of e-commerce in the hands of retailers.

The Forbes Middle East ranking, which focuses on female leaders and business leaders, who stand out for their ability to drive the growth of their businesses and inspire the technological community, qualified Sophia Alj’s entrepreneurial adventure as “a long river which is far from calm”. It is therefore not surprising that it occupies the 8th position in this ranking.

Sophia Alj now plays in the big leagues. The co-founder of Chari has established itself with the giants of technology and innovation in the four corners of the world (Binance, Bolt or Shein). A fine career for this renowned technological innovator who occupies a place of choice in the world of Tech.
