the 26 Moroccan players called up for the World Cup

Morocco coach Walid Regragui unveiled Thursday the list of players who will participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, including stars Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea) and Achraf Hakimi (Paris SG).

“There have been decisions that have been made… There will be a lot of disappointed people and a lot of happy people. We have worked a lot on this list with the staff, it is the best possible”, assured Regragui before name the 26 players selected for the World Cup.

“We want to do something big. We hope that every Moroccan will be behind us to support us,” he added.

Attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech, who had put his international career on hold due to a falling out with former coach Vahid Halilhodzic, is back.

“Coach Vahid” was ousted from his post in August due to “divergent points of view” with the Moroccan Federation (FRMF), which was in favor of Ziyech’s return. Walid Regragui, a former international who worked for several French clubs, succeeded him at the end of August.

Abderrazak Hamed Allah, player of the Saudi club Al Ittihad, is also a comeback in the list of the Atlas Lions, after a three-year absence.

Regragui has also called up promising midfielder Bilal El Khannouss, who plays for Belgian club KRC Genk, for the first time.

Olympique de Marseille striker Amine Harit is also logically in the group.

The Moroccan coach, on the other hand, chose to dismiss the trio of attackers Ryan Mmaee (Ferencváros / HUN), Munir El Haddadi (Getafe / ESP) and Ayoub El Kaabi (Hatayspor / TUR).

In Qatar, Ziyech, Hakimi and their teammates will try to go as far as their predecessors in 1986, when Morocco was the first African team in history to reach an 8th final of the World Cup.

Poured into group F, he will face Croatia, Belgium and Canada.
