In an opening speech, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid underlined the importance of this cinephile meeting which brings together a host of filmmakers from different backgrounds: “I am very happy to ‘to be present for this edition… This festival brings together artists and filmmakers who deserve to be honored and celebrated,’ he said.
The Rabat International Arthouse Film Festival is a film event that brings together several artists, film enthusiasts, journalists and lovers of the 7th art each year. Very popular, the festival welcomed during the first day, three artistic figures who distinguished themselves by their cinematographic creations.
This is the Moroccan director Nabil Ayouch whose talent, through his cinematographic creations, from his feature film “Maktoub” to his latest film “Haut et fort”, has been rewarded with dozens of national and international awards. The famous French director Jean-Pierre Améris will also be honored, known for his remarkable presence on the European and international film scene, both for his creative ideas and for his criticism in the cinema, not without mentioning the brilliance of his films which bear certain artistic and technical dimensions.
Completing the trio, Burkinabe director Gaston Kaboré, is one of the pioneers of African cinema who have affixed the mark of true African identity. His films were made with very limited means, but managed to translate a real artistic vision, conforming the position of Burkina Faso, as a space to celebrate the production of the African continent.
According to the Festival’s organizing committee, “these tributes reward the work and efforts of these artists in the audiovisual sector. Then, to honor the stature of the festival as a prestigious cinematic event that celebrates names that identify with very important moments in the history of world cinema, and at the same time encourages young talents who work in the fields of culture and art”.
This festival, which contributes to the influence of the city of Rabat, has acquired its reputation in the celebration of auteur cinema. It will present a series of films, from 44 countries, which reflect the cultures of diverse societies, and compete in three main categories, to be decided by a specialized jury.
Approached by the newspaper “L’Opinion”, actor and screenwriter Farid Regragui expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the invitation to this festival: “I am pleased to be present today at the opening of the Rabat International Arthouse Film Festival. Of course, I am invited there as an actor and screenwriter to testify to the creations that distinguish this edition. Each year, we find new themes, new ways of dealing with them and we have a range of films that are fortunately not alike”. he indicated. This actor, well known from cinema and television in Morocco, has had a brilliant acting career.
During this 27th edition, other tributes will be paid to artists from all over the world in recognition of their distinguished creations.
