The Gnaoua Show Festival for the world returns for its 5th edition in Marrakech

The 5th edition of the Gnaoua Show Festival for the world will be held on September 23 and 24 in the legendary Jemaâ El Fna square, under the banner “A good successor to a good predecessor”.

Organized by the Association Le Grand Atlas and the Hmitti Association for Culture and Artistic Creation, this festival will see the participation of six troupes representing the cities of Rabat, Casablanca, Essaouira and Marrakech, led by experienced maâlems of art Gnaoua, such as Aziz Baqbou, Hassan Boussou, Houssam Gania…, underlined the organizers during a press conference, held Friday in Marrakech.

“We had the idea to create this festival after the 2019 edition of the National Festival of Popular Arts. We saw the importance of organizing a large-scale festival to celebrate Gnaoua art, an authentic art recognized by the world. ‘UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity”, underlined Mohamed Knidiri, president of the Association Le Grand Atlas, in a declaration to M24, the television channel of continuous information of the MAP.

In order to preserve this popular musical genre, “The Association Le Grand Atlas has sealed a partnership with the Hmitti Association for Culture and Artistic Creation in order to federate efforts to allow this festival to find a place among the major festivals. , like the Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira”, noted Mr. Knidiri.

And to emphasize that “this musical genre has many aficionados who appreciate its rhythms and its lyrics, as well as the spiritual aspect and the developments that it knows at all levels”.

For his part, the president of the Hmitti Association for Culture and Artistic Creation, Othman Ait Hmitti, indicated that the festival “benefits from the support of many partners, including the Association Le Grand Atlas, the Regional Directorate of Culture , the Marrakech-Safi Regional Council, the Municipal Council, the Medina District Council and the Al Omrane Foundation”.

“We hope that this edition will be crowned with success and realize the slogan it carries”, he said, indicating that this edition will see the participation of experienced mâalems, “in order to remain faithful to its spirit and respond to the aspirations of an audience that appreciates this musical genre classified as intangible heritage.”

It should be recalled that the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO proceeded, in 2019, to the inscription of Gnaoua art on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
