you could drop it on concrete without shaking

I tell him, leave it alonesang Renaud at the end of the 1970s. Without transition, in 2023, you should be able to “leave concrete” the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra on concrete without fear of breakage. At least that’s what we can hope for after the officialization of Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Corning has indeed unveiled its latest generation of reinforced glass for smartphones. The firm thus puts forward a revised composition for the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 offering “better drop resistance on rough surfaces like concrete […] while maintaining the scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass Victus“.

Not even afraid of concrete

As a reminder, the first Gorilla Glass Victus of the name was Corning’s most resistant glass so far and it is the one found on most of the most expensive smartphones wishing to reassure their users.

The company thus ensures that “thehe Gorilla Glass Victus 2 survived drops of up to one meter onto a concrete-like surface“. By comparison, Corning says lenses produced by competitors crack after drops of half a meter or less. “Additionally, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 continued to survive drops of up to two meters onto an asphalt-like surface and retained up to four times the scratch resistance of competing aluminosilicate.“.

To underline the relevance of Gorilla Glass Victus 2, Corning also mentions two interesting observations. The first is that “84% of consumers in three of the biggest smartphone markets — China, India and the United States — cite durability as the number one purchasing criterion, after the brand itself“. The second is that “smartphones are nearly 15% heavier, and screen sizes are up to 10% larger than four years ago“. This necessarily influences the way in which the resistance of smartphone screens must be designed.

What does it have to do with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra?

According to Corning, the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 should arrive on the market “in the coming months“. However, we expect that Samsung presents its Galaxy S23 around the beginning of 2023. However, this range usually enjoys the best version of Gorilla Glass. Moreover, a recent rumor precisely indicated that the Galaxy S23 Ultra would have a very resistant screen.

There are therefore good reasons to see this new reinforced glass being exploited for the first time on the S23 Ultra and plausibly also on the S23 and S23+. This bodes interesting things for smartphones always a little more durables. The more you tend to keep your phones longer and longer.
